Glucosamine and Arthritis in Pets

Glucosamine and Arthritis in Pets
By Beverly Maniago

Pets are usually very active and robust when it comes to outdoor activities. Dogs especially, love to run around, fetch, and play. Cats are very nimble, love to jump and climb but tend to take life a little easier. So what happens when we notice our pets are not acting like they usually do? If their level of activity decreases, they begin to move a little slower than they use to, have trouble getting up, or develop a limp in their walk. Many things can come into play here and depending on your pets level of distress and your concerns; a trip to the vet should be considered. Its not uncommon as our aging pets to develop the same kinds of joint problems humans do. Its possible that your pet may be suffering from some form of arthritis.

What should I do as the pet owner?

When you do notice some signs, getting an immediate check-up with your trusted veterinarian is essential. Why? Ignoring signs and symptoms usually aggravates the condition. Thus, it is important to consult with your veterinarian for three reasons: (1) to diagnose your pet's ailment, if there's any, (2) to know the severity of the condition, and (3) to provide your pet with quick and effective treatment for his or her condition.

If the diagnosis from your vet is arthritis, most are in the form of osteoarthritis which is basically due to inflammation of cartilage in the joints resulting from (1) any traumatic injury in the past, (2) ageing, (3) excess pressure to the joints, (4) dehydration. Osteoarthritis generally is a product of deteriorating cartilage in the joints due to deficiencies in the production of glucosamine and essential building blocks of healthy joints commonly caused by ageing.

What can be done to relieve the pain?

Again, the importance of consulting with your vet must be stressed. Any treatment for your pet's arthritis must be duly approved by your vet before administering the said treatment to your pet to avoid future complication that can even be fatal. Pain relief for arthritis conditions in pets can be answered by non-inflammatory drugs. However, some pets may experience some gastrointestinal side effects with intake of these drugs and most importantly, these drugs may provide pain relief but do not address the ailment.

An alternative to these non-inflammatory drugs are dietary supplements that contain glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. They may come in tablet or liquid form but the latter is more recommended because (1) its much easier to administer and (2) its quickly absorbed into your pets system, showing effective results in as little as 10 to 14 days. Glucosamine supplements such as Synflex Liquid Glucosamine is a highly recommended product that has been known to relieve and treat various forms of arthritis in both humans and animals. Synflex contains glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate which work to repair damaged cartilage. Synflex also contains anti-inflammatory substances such as yucca and boswellin that eases joint pain, and other vitamins and minerals important to healthy joints. Synflex Liquid Glucosamine is not only effective in treating arthritis and other joints ailments in pets, Syn-flex is also very safe, with no known dangers or side effects that youll have to worry about.
