Arthritis is known to affect around forty percent of the Americans and over fifty percent of the people globally. This is one disease that is responsible for the maximum amount of pain worldwide and thousands of dollars have been spent on pain relief medications because of this.

Arthritis is one of the oldest diseases known to mankind which could date back to thousands of years in fact the Romans were believed to have built the roman baths for therapeutic reasons other than hygiene as the hot water baths were used by ancient Romans to ease the pains associated with arthritis.

The word arthritis is a blend of the ancient Greek word arthron which translated literally means joint and the word it is which means inflammation the disease being inflammation of the joint.

The arthritic conditions are either inflammatory or degenerative. The inflammatory form of arthritis is characterized by the presence of swelling, redness and warmth of the involved joints while the degenerative form of arthritis is best identified as having a small element of inflammation and being predominantly degenerative which is best known for the wearing out of the cartilages lining the joints.

Simply put, arthritis can be defines as any inflammation of the joint and could either be chronic or short term in duration. There is no simple cure for arthritis, however there are many natural remedies available which can ease the severity of arthritis symptoms and effect a repair on cartilage.

Should the person experience some muscle pain which lasts more than 2 or 3 days, there is a strong chance that one has arthritis.

Arthritis is a common disease that affects millions of people worldwide. This can be felt in the persons joints, skin and organs inside the body. Should the person feel anything wrong, it is advisable to go straight to the doctor.

Doctors have discovered that there are over 100 types of arthritis. Given the number, the doctor will not be able to know which one is affecting the person without an examination.

There are 2 common forms of arthritis. The first is rheumatoid arthritis which is considered a chronic disease. There is inflammation in the joints caused by cartilage damage. Anyone who has this will suffer long term joint damage that will lead to chronic pain and disability. Pain is usually felt when waking up in the morning and will gradually disappear during the day.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a problem that will not go away. This happens in three stages. The first is swelling. The second is the rapid division and growth of cells. The third is when these cells release enzymes that will eat the bone causing the joint to lose shape until the person will not be able to move it anymore.

Since this is systemic disease, it can spread and affect other organs in the body. The best way to prevent is from happening is detecting it early to prevent the person from being disabled.

This can be treated with proper medication and therapy. There many drugs available that the patient can use. Some drugs offer pain relief to reduce the inflammation. Others can just do one function.

The second is called osteoarthritis. This happens more often than rheumatoid arthritis but unlike the first, there is no inflammation present. The cartilage in the joint is damaged and will eventually degenerate. Pain will slightly be felt when the person gets up but this will hurt later on during the day.

Osteoarthritis can either be primary or secondary. When it is primary, it is often associated with age. It is similar to a car where the parts have to be replaced due to wear and tear. Doctors consider this to be normal as people grow older.

The secondary type is often associated with something else that has caused this to happen. Some of these factors are an injury that took place, heredity, obesity and bone density.

Osteoarthritis can be treated with medication, exercise, weight control, joint protection, physical and occupational therapy. This is done to relieve the pain and slow the progression of the disease.

Both of these are caused by different things. The common thing between these 2 types is that joint pain can happen anywhere in the body.

Given the many medications available to treat this disease, the patient has to be aware of the side effects of each before choosing which one to use. The doctor should explain these to the person in order to make the right decision.

Arthritis and its different forms will not go away. Since this is an insurable disease, the best thing that the doctor and others can do until a cure if found is to help the patient ease the pain the slow the growth of the disease.

Research is always ongoing into new and better medications for arthritis which is a very good thing. But where is all this leading us?

Of course we need effective pain medication for arthritis to enable sufferers to live normal lives. But are all these expensive medications controlling the disease or simply masking the symptoms?

Heres a quick and dirty lowdown on whats currently available both over the counter (OTC) and on prescription only.

For mild cases of arthritis -

Some milder cases of arthritis never make it into the doctors surgery. Indeed the sufferer might not even be aware that they are suffering from arthritis at all. They may be feeling a few aches and pains which they put down to old age or even the cold damp weather.

That may be all well and good, but even OTC medications can be dangerous if taken over a long period of time. The concept of more is better can also happen if the pain gradually becomes worse. This can lead to serious side effects.

OTC medications include aspirin and ibuprofen. These medications can cause intestinal bleeding and kidney damage in large doses. Aspirin also destroys vitamin C in the body leading to lower immunity.

For More Advanced Arthritis-

By this stage most people have consulted their doctor. Prescription medication at this stage normally consists of the Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDS. These do target the pain and inflammation of arthritis symptoms but have a range of side effects including stomach upset, abdominal pain, and ulcers.

People with high blood pressure, those with kidney problems and especially people who have heart problems are especially at risk with NSAIDS.

Enter the COX-2 inhibitors. These have been designed for people whose stomach problems cannot tolerate the above. Unfortunately the risks remain for chest pain, heart attack and stroke victims.

For Advanced Arthritis-

For those suffering extreme pain and swelling the medical profession brings out the heavy artillery - Corticosteroids. These drugs contain man made cortisone and can be injected directly into the affected joints or taken orally.

Long term use of these can produce sleep problems, weight gain, osteoporosis and loss of immunity. Also available to those for whom nothing else seems to work are Biologic Response Modifiers (Biologics). Biologics are derived from live sources, plants and animals and are not manufactured chemically. They are mainly used for sufferers of Rheumatoid Arthritis and are given intravenously or by injection. They cant be taken in tablet form.

Biologics suppress the immune system which leaves people prone to infections. They are also very expensive and cant be stored without freezing.

Also available mainly to Rheumatoid Arthritis sufferers are Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDS) These work by stopping the immune system from attacking the joints. DMARDS may take up to three months to reduce symptoms but they do help to stop joint damage even though they cant repair any previous damage.

Although these drugs are a boon to many, they work mainly at masking the symptoms of arthritis and cant reverse the damage already caused. Most people thinks this is impossible, it isnt!

Natural treatments for arthritis do exist and can significantly stop some cases of arthritis, relieve pain and inflammation and in some cases, reverse joint damage.

You need to make sure that the calcium to phosphorus ratio in any of the foods you eat is as low as possible this is because excess phosphorus will increase the loss of calcium from the body and worsen the condition. The more phosphorous-containing foods you eat, the more you need to supplement with a good source of calcium.

Reduce your intake of:

red meat, red-fleshed fish

most grains, especially wheat.

Eliminate:

soft drinks high in phosphoric acid

organ meat (liver, kidney), processed meat especially high in phosphorus

caffeine - increases the rate of loss of minerals and nutrients

fried foods and vegetable oil - a high intake of fried foods and omega 6 from vegetable oil can make the inflammation worse

sugar results in poor absorption of nutrients

antacids neutralize stomach acid and result in poor absorption of calcium (heartburn and indigestion are caused by poor eating habits and NOT ENOUGH stomach acid!)

Important Note: Eliminate the bad fats such as margarine, cooking with too much vegetable oil and fried foods from your diet. A high intake of vegetable oil (a source of Omega 6) needs to be avoided as this will aggravate any inflammation.

Arthritis Foods

The best arthritis foods are diets high in calcium and magnesium and other trace minerals this will ensure healthy bone and bone matrix structure. Specific nutrients are also required to build bone and bone structure.Calcium: Non fat milk, yoghurt, cottage cheese, snow peas, soybeans, tofu, sardines, salmon, walnuts and almonds, sunflower seeds, kale and other green leafy vegetables, broccoli, alfalfa seeds - to name a few. Milk isnt a great source of calcium because it has a low magnesium content and you need magnesium to get the calcium into your bones.

Magnesium: Many fruits and vegetables, whole grains, leafy vegetables, nuts, beans, bananas and apricots all these make great arthritis foods. Vitamin D: is required to get the calcium into the bones. The best source is the sun about 10 minutes per day is fine. Other sources include dairy products and fatty fish.

Trace minerals: Boron and Manganese are important to help the body absorb Calcium; the best sources of Boron are green leafy vegetables, apples, almonds pears and legumes. For Manganese, look for ginger and oats as your arthritis foods.

Collagen & Support Tissues: Collagen is part of our bone matrix, the cartilage in our joints and in the fluid that protects and lubricates our joints. Its also part of our skin, hair and the connective tissues of the body.

Arthritis foods containing the following nutrients will provide nutrition for bone support: zinc, copper, selenium and beta-carotene (Vitamin A). Green leafy vegetables and pumpkin seeds are good sources of zinc; selenium may be found in brazil nuts from Brazil (because of the high selenium content in the soil); while Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, berries, red and green peppers, tomatoes, broccoli and spinach. Eggs and meat are good sources of amino acids which form part of the collagen structure. Essential Fatty Acids are excellent arthritis foods and are required for the bodys natural pain relief and anti-inflammatory responses. They are also part of the protective joint fluid. Best sources are from fish (particularly oily fish such as salmon and mackerel), animal fat and some oils such as flaxseed (for omega 3)and borage oil (for omega 6).

Regarding essential fatty acids, ideally you should consume Omega 6 EFA & Omega 3 EFA at a ratio of 2:1. Most people find it very difficult to get this right (the average ratio in the U.S. and UK is around 10:1) so we suggest you use an EFA Supplement from a quality source.

Final Note on Arthritis Foods

While it is possible to meet some of your dietary requirements from the food you eat, if you are serious about preventing or reversing arthritis, you need to consume these arthritis foods in combination with nutrient supplements.

Also consider that the majority of the food we eat is grown in minerally-depleted soils so an almond may not contain all the calcium and magnesium its supposed to have, sad but true!

The term arthritis itself is derived from the Greek words for joint and inflammation, and covers a group of health conditions that affect the bodys joints. Arthritis has been known and recorded for centuries. The first case was reported to date as far back as 4500 BC. Very simply, arthritis involves swelling of the joints, such that mere movement can cause body pains.

Such joints are sensitive to changes in the weather, and elder patients suffering from arthritis claim that their pains are greatest in the morning, when they first rise. Younger patients can also suffer from arthritis the arthritic joint pain is not usually the general feature of juvenile arthritis, but the tendency to move, or the refusal to move at all, as in the case of especially young children.

To diagnose arthritis and distinguish it from routine or simple joint pain, physicians conduct a battery of blood tests and x-rays. Some blood tests can check for the presence of certain antibodies, since some forms of arthritis arise out of the bodys immune system launching an attack on itself, making these forms of arthritis autoimmune disorders. The types of therapy to be used depend on the type of arthritis with which the patient is afflicted. A few common types include the following.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic autoimmune disease, where the bodys immune system launches an attack on the joints, then moves on to affect other bodily organs such as the skin, heart, and lungs.

Psoriatic arthritis is also an autoimmune disorder with symptoms similar to rheumatoid arthritis. It is common in patients affected by psoriasis, a skin disease.

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of crystals of uric acid in joints. Those affected with gout have to take a low purine diet, or to stay away from high-protein foods such as sardines and certain types of fish, some mussels, sweatbreads such as kidneys and brains of animals, and alcohol.

If you think you have arthritis, consult a doctor about your condition and have the necessary tests performed. If all signs point to a positive diagnosis, be sure to follow all instructions to the hilt: take all the medications prescribed, avoid all the foods that have to be avoided, and attend all therapy sessions if you are required to do so.

If you know someone with arthritis, or are living with someone afflicted with the disease, take a role in monitoring the patients progress by making sure that the patient follows the therapy regimen, or by watching the patient well following surgery. Arthritis is a disease that requires patience, both on the part of the afflicted and the caregiver, so obey all instructions and ask questions if necessary.

Think Positive To Relieve Arthritis Pain.

My name is Cathy Posner and I live in Wauchope which is on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. I was born in 1957 and in late 2004 was told that the aches in my joints were Rheumatoid Arthritis.

My husband, Ray has a very positive approach to everything and I guess that has rubbed off on me, so rather than sit back and let things progress I decided to see what I could do for myself.

Let me give you an example of Rays positive attitude. In September 2003 he had to have open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve. We live on 160 acres so before he went into hospital he slashed a walking track so that he could regularly exercise when he came out of hospital.

Not only that he left the tractor set up for slashing. Four weeks after surgery, even though he was not allowed to lift anything heavier that a 2 liter bottle of milk (about 4 pints) he got the OK to slash the paddocks as long as he did big easy turns at the end of each run. (Actually I think he secretly enjoyed having me open the car door for him and carry the groceries.)

So, as you can see, in his mind there was no way that he wasnt going to get back to a normal life as quickly as possible, but within the guidelines of what the Doctors told him.

Now when you live with someone like that its hard not to take a positive approach.

How can having a positive attitude help you in your fight against the pain and difficulties arthritis can cause?

I know some of you already reading this have a positive approach so please bear with me.

As I was saying Rays positive attitude helped him in his recovery. I dont know how much pain he was in but I can imagine it was considerable. After all you dont have your sternum sawn in half and rejoined without pain.

In fact for some time he had to clutch a folded towel to his chest whenever he coughed or went to the bathroom but he never complained once.

He just got on with life within the restraints set by the Doctors and in fact even started a new business while he was recovering.

OK you might ask how does this relate to me? I know pain can be an all consuming, overpowering feeling but you need to get your mind off it.

If you sit back and wallow in self-pity your days and nights will drag, you will become depressed (or even more depressed) and your pain feeds upon itself your mind magnifies the intensity of your pain and you feel even worse.

If this describes you and my comments offend you then I am sorry but hopefully what I am about to say will be a wake up call for you.

What are the benefits of having a positive attitude? Well to start with your mind can be trained to focus on things other that your pain. When it does, your pain is shut out creating a sense of feeling better. This feeling feeds on itself in the same way that if you allow yourself to focus on your pain, it seems to get worse.

Can you learn to have a positive attitude? Of course you can. If you are still breathing you have the ability to learn. And really it is not so much learning but altering the state of your mind.

All you need is the desire to help yourself, to get relief from your pain and overcome obstacles that your arthritis creates for you.

May I suggest some things you can do?

How is your lifestyle? Do you look after yourself? Yourwellbeing is very important to how you feel and influences how you think.

Diet and Exercise are important to your overall health. Ifyou are not eating correctly and doing some exercise withinyour limits, you are not helping yourself in your fight to getarthritis pain relief.

I recommend you read a book on Positive Thinking. There are some excellent publications available and most will give you the tools you need.

Now focus on that thing. Experience it again. Feel the emotion associated with it. Live it. Breathe it. Be there in your mind be that person that you were then.

Do this 2 or 3 times a day for 5 to 10 minutes at a time. Tip: if you sit down and find you go to sleep, try standing up.

This technique helps to reprogram your subconscious to think pain free and you should find that your pain decreases or may actually go away.

You can also use this anytime your pain starts to get the better of you. Just go back to that time when you were pain free and allow your mind to again experience that feeling.

This really works. But dont just do it once you must do it every day, without fail and you will soon see the benefits.

Some people have deformities around the knee. These may be situated in the thigh bone or leg bone. Normally in the standing position, there should be no gap between the inner side of the knee and ankle joint. If a gap exists between the knees, then the person has bow legs( Genu varum) and if a gap exists between the ankles, then the legs diverge at the ankle, causing knock knees( Genu valgum). Both these deformities can lead to one sided wear of the knee joint and arthritis in one half of the knee.

Surgical solutions are available to prevent or treat early arthritis. These alternatives avoid knee pain from arthritis.These knee reconstructive procedures attempt to restore the anatomy of the joint and are mainly of a biological nature. They do not involve joint replacement. Examples are

1) Knee ligament reconstruction- ACL reconstruction is possible through tiny ke-hole incisions (arthroscopic surgery). Graft is taken from the patients own body (autograft) or from a brain dead person, (allograft). This tendon graft is threaded through bony tunnels in the leg and thigh bones and is fixed with screws, buttons or other devices.

2) Meniscal suture- This is a procedure in which attempt is made to suture a torn meniscus if situated in a suitable position. Concomitant ACL reconstruction is required if there is an injury to this ligament also.

3)Meniscal transplant- This procedure is to be introduced shortly. In this menisci are harvested from the knee joints of brain dead living donors or non heart beating donors. These are preserved and then grafted into the damaged knee.

4) Reparative cartilage procedure are availble to salvage localised cartilage defects and prevent their progression to extensive involvement. Cartilage plugs are harvested from non weight bearing portion of the knee and re-implanted into the lesions.

5) Corrective osteotomy- Mal-aligned joints can be corrected by an osteotomy( division of bone). After this surgery, stresses across a joint are distributed more evenly excess wear from one half of the joint is minmized. This again prevent rapid progression of osteoarthitis and can pospone the need for a replacement.

The one lie that arthritis sufferers hear most is that, All we can do is manage the pain. You will just have to live with it.

It is true, that through medication, all you can do is manage the pain. What they dont tell you is that the painkillers actually increase the pain. So as the meds ware off, the pain comes back, as bad or worse than before.

You would think that people would notice this. Actually our people have been so brainwashed in the Doctor knows Best mindset, that they dont question what they are told.

The truth is that you dont have to suffer with arthritis. You can do more than manage the pain. You can get rid of arthritis pain once and for all.

The reason you dont hear about this, is that it costs nothing for you to do it your self, and relatively little, if you get some help. Remember this fact. There is no money in healthy, pain-free people.

Your doctor either does not know the truth about arthritis, or he/she thinks you are too stubborn to change, so why bother to tell you how to get rid of the arthritis.

I personally dont think you are that stubborn or foolish. I think that if you knew the truth, and what to do about it, that you would want to change whatever lifestyle practices you can, to get rid of the pain.

To get rid of Arthritis pain, you first need to stop causing it to develop. Then you need to give your body the tools it needs to rebuild healthy tissue.

There are several lifestyle issues that work together to cause arthritis.

Psoriasis rarely appears on children. It usually develops at the age of 15 to 35 and occurs equally both on men and women no matter what race.

Occurrence of psoriasis can range from mild to moderate to severe. When three to ten percent of the body is affected, it is considered a moderate case, but when more than ten percent is affected, it is already considered severe. Whatever the case of psoriasis a person has, though, it always affects his or her quality of living because of the health complications it entails. The skin, which is its primary target, can appear to be discolored if severe psoriasis occurs.

Another health complication that is linked with psoriasis is psoriatic arthritis. It may develop anytime but, mostly, it occurs in the adults. Although having psoriasis does not necessarily mean that psoriatic arthritis will follow.
